The Rede Valley is 37 miles (60 kilometres) long. The River Rede rises on the slopes of Carter Fell on the border of Northumberland with Scotland. From here, it flows south-east to Otterburn, then south to West Woodburn and finally south-east to join the North Tyne at Redesmouth, near Bellingham.
Redesdale has been a major transport route for over 2,000 years. The A68 / A696, one of the main routes to Scotland, runs through it, and it is also traversed by the Pennine Way.
